POLYETHYLENE

 

POLYETHYLENE It is a thermoplastic used with many products. Its name is derived from ethylene in the form of monomer, polyethylene is made by use of ethylene. Its name is PE in plastic industry. C2H4, ethylene molecule comprises of two CH2s bonded by double-bond. (CH2=CH2). Polyethylene is produced by polymerization of ethylene. Polymerization method, radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, ion coordination polymerization and cationic polymerization method can be used. Each of these methods allows different types of polyethylene productions. CLASSIFICATION OF POLYETHYLENE: Polyethylene is classified in various classes based on density and chemical properties. The classification depends of mechanical properties, molecular weight, crystal structure and branching type. • UHMWPE ( ultra high molecular weight PE) • HDPE (high density PE) • HDXLPE (high density cross-linked PE) • PEX (cross-linked PE) • MDPE (middle density PE)) • LDPE (low density PE) • LLDPE (linear bonded low density PE) • VLDPE (very low density PE) PROPERTIES : Even if its properties vary by types, general properties include weather-proof and moisture resistance, flexibility, weak mechanical force and superior chemical resistance. It is cost-efficient and has many areas of use such as containers, plastic boxes, kitchen utensils, coatings, pipes and tubes, toys, isolated layers of cables, packaging and package film. PLASTIC EXTRUSION : It is a production method used for fabrication of many plastic materials such as pipe, hose, cable, profile, etc. The machine used for extrusion is very similar to the injection machine. An engine rotates the screw in a bushing coated with heater and melts the plastic granules under temperature and pressure. Melted plastic takes shape through the mold and is transferred to the liquid in the form of a long channel for cooling. Shape of mold determines the shape of channel. It takes form after cooling as solid. Marking can be performed in the channel and then it is cut at equal gaps. Parts proceed on rolling presses and are packaged or stocked. Shapes delivered by extrusion may be T-cross section, U-cross section, square-cross section, I-cross section, L-cross section and circular cross sections. Fiber optic cable is one of the products produced by extrusion.
